Scholars’ Letters

SCMA members feel gratified that we are making a difference in the life of the disadvantaged but deserving young people.  We not only provide tuition assistance but we also communicate and meet with our scholars, especially when they were struggling to finish their education.  Most of our scholars are now on a great career path as can be seen from the letters that they continue to send us.  Below are summaries of a small sampling of these letters. Click the links below to see their full letters and pictures

Angelika Katipunan graduated with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Mapua University in 2020.  She was President of the graduating class and won Best Thesis Study with Design and Power Generation of Stacked Plant Microbial Fuel Cell Using Bush Sitao (a local plant). In Angelika’s letter, she’s asking for our prayers as she prepares to take the Licensing Board Exam.

Carlos Norbert Abano graduated with a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Mapua Institute of Technology in 2017. Three years after graduation, he is working as an engineer at Maynilad Water Services Inc., one of the largest water utilities in the Philippines.  Norbert is very spiritual and is giving back to the community inspiring children and volunteering in the pollution clean-up of Manila Bay. Czarina Anne Martin graduated with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering from Mapua University in 2020.  Czarina’s letter describes her struggles as a working student and an SCMA scholar while in college. She now works at Wilbur-Ellis, a global company with offices in Manila and is building up her career. Her student thesis was selected and she made a presentation (virtual because of Covid) at the IOEM conference in Dubai.

Kevin Rowe Almoro graduated with a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Mapua Institute of Technology in 2013. After graduation, he worked for Aboitiz Corporation as a project officer and for Arcadis as a structural/bridge designer, completing projects for different countries.  In 2018, Kevin moved to Okinawa and is working as a civil engineer on US military projects. He is looking to further his career by taking the California EIT exam from there. In Kevin’s letter, he promises to “pay forward” to others the help he had from the SCMA scholarship program.

Jhoan De Jesus is looking to graduate from Mapua University with a double major in BS Physics and BS Material Science and Engineering as of 2020. She presented her paper on application of a novel biomaterial called polyaniline-chitosan for drug delivery in sealing wounds at the 21st International Vacuum Congress held in Malmö, Sweden. Jhoanne wishes to use the material closer to home as she worked with a group called "Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao." Jhoan’s letter mentions that her SCMA scholarship not only helped her with much-needed financial support but also propelled her to focus on her studies.

Krysta Joannie Monica Montemayor graduated with a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Mapua Institute of Technology in 2016. She now works as a Project Coordinator for Arcadis, a global design and consultancy firm with offices in the Philippines. Krysta is a holistic person, applying disciplines of continuous self-improvement and work-life balance. Among her activities are self-learning French, climbing mountains and meditating. Krysta’s letter describes how SCMA’s presence in her life in her time of need as a student caused her to work very hard to maintain her grades and become the successful person that she is today.
